The Area & Local Attractions
Puglia
Puglia forms the spur and heel of Italy where two thirds of the country's olives are grown. It is a rich and fertile landscape where many vegetables and grapes are also grown.
A region rich in history and tradition with castles and cathedrals and the conical roofed 'trulli' which are a typical house of the Mediterranean and now found only in Puglia.
The local people are very friendly.
Great for:
- Walking holidays
- Countryside retreats
- Beach/poolside relaxation
- Cycling holidays
Valle d'Itria
The Valle d'Itria is particularly beautiful with many pretty villages and five main towns – Alberobello, Cisternino, Martina Franca, Ostuni and Locorotondo.
Alberobello is a UNESCO world heritage site with over 1000 trulli. It attracts many visitors from all over the world.
Festivals & Golden Sands
During July and August many of the small villages and towns hold jazz or music festivals, please see the following Puglia Fiesta Guide.
The coastline is very beautiful with long sweeps of soft golden sand on both Adriatic and Ionian Seas.
Food & Wine
Excellent food and wine can be found in this area of Italy. Since the third millennium it has been inhabited by Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Byzantines and Normans, which has influenced the local cuisine.
Fish and shellfish are in abundance here. Also try the local handmade pasta 'Orecchiette' – shaped like little ears. Puglia actually produces more wine than any other part of Italy, all very high quality.
